From the Savannah to the Sea: My 2-Week Tanzania & Zanzibar Itinerary

If you were to ask me what the perfect trip looks like, I would tell you it needs a balance of heart-pounding adventure and soul-soothing relaxation. My recent two-week trip to Tanzania delivered exactly that.
For 14 days, I traded my usual routine for dusty jeep trails, endless savannahs, and the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean. We split our trip into two distinct chapters: a 5-day immersive safari on the mainland and a 7-day tropical escape to the southern coast of Zanzibar.
Here is how we spent our two weeks in East Africa, and why this itinerary is an absolute dream for any traveler (and photographer!).
🦁 Chapter 1: The Wild (5-Day Safari)
We knew we wanted our safari to be authentic, so we hired a fantastic local guide. Traveling with someone who knows the land intimately completely changes the experience. They spot a leopard hiding in a tree from a mile away and understand the behavior of the wildlife in a way no guidebook ever could.
Over five days, my [Tamron 70-200mm lens] practically lived on my camera as we explored some of the most breathtaking national parks on the planet:
- Tarangire National Park: Known as the kingdom of elephants and iconic baobab trees. The landscape here is dramatically beautiful, and getting up close to massive elephant herds was a surreal way to start the trip.
- Serengeti National Park: The endless plains. This is exactly what you picture when you think of Africa. We spent our days tracking lions, watching graceful giraffes, and witnessing the raw, unfiltered beauty of the circle of life.
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area: Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater feels like entering a lost world. It’s a massive volcanic caldera teeming with wildlife, offering some of the highest predator densities in Africa.
Travel Tip: The early morning wake-up calls are brutal, but the golden hour light over the savannah makes every lost hour of sleep totally worth it!
🌴 Chapter 2: The Ocean (1 Week in Zanzibar)
After five days of bumping along dirt roads, we hopped on a short flight to Zanzibar, swapping our hiking boots for bare feet.
Instead of staying in the busier northern areas, we set up our home base in the South of Zanzibar. The vibe here is noticeably more laid-back, authentic, and deeply connected to the rhythm of the tides.
Our week was a beautiful blur of simple island routines:
- Morning Runs & Beach Walks: Thanks to the dramatic tidal changes in the south, the beach transforms daily. We spent our mornings running along the pristine white sand and taking long walks to explore the tidal pools.
- Sunset Aperitifs: There is nothing quite like a cold drink in hand while watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the Indian Ocean in shades of pink and orange.
- Underwater Adventures: The highlight of Zanzibar? The scuba diving. The southern coast is an absolute paradise for marine life. We did so many dives, exploring vibrant coral reefs and swimming alongside tropical fish. This is where my trusty GoPro Hero 9 truly shined, capturing all the underwater magic while I focused on my breathing and the incredible blue world around me.

🎒 Final Thoughts
Tanzania is a country of beautiful contrasts. One week you are holding your breath as a cheetah walks past your jeep, and the next you are breathing through a regulator surrounded by sea turtles. If you are planning a trip to Africa and can’t decide between a wildlife safari and a beach holiday—don’t choose. Do both.
Stay hungry, stay foolish, stay curious!
