Florence is essentially an open-air museum, a place where every cobblestone and terracotta roof whispers stories of the Renaissance. As a travel and landscape photographer, I find endless inspiration here. It is the perfect city to practice my philosophy: searching for the perfect composition while embracing the imperfect, spontaneous moments of everyday Italian life.
If you have four days in Florence, you have the perfect amount of time to soak in the art, chase the golden hour light, and explore without rushing. Here is how I suggest you spend your time:
Day 1: The Heart of the Renaissance Start your trip at the iconic Piazza del Duomo. The intricate details of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Brunelleschi’s Dome offer incredible architectural framing for your photos. In the afternoon, head to Piazza della Signoria to admire the open-air sculptures and the imposing Palazzo Vecchio. Don’t forget to take a walk around the exterior courtyard of the Uffizi Gallery to capture the symmetry of the columns.
Day 2: Masterpieces and Golden Hour Spend your morning admiring Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery. After lunch, take a stroll across the legendary Ponte Vecchio, capturing the reflections of the colorful jewelry shops in the Arno river. As the sun starts to set, this is your moment: make the climb up to Piazzale Michelangelo. The panoramic view over Florence during the golden hour is an absolute must for any landscape photographer.
Day 3: The Artisan Soul of Oltrarno Cross the river to explore the Oltrarno district, the authentic and less crowded heart of Florence. Wander through the vast Boboli Gardens and snap some majestic shots of Pitti Palace. Spend your evening relaxing in Piazza Santo Spirito. This is the best place to be a “fly on the wall”—grab a glass of local wine, observe the locals, and capture the genuine, vibrant lifestyle of the Florentines.
Day 4: Hidden Gems and Local Flavors For your last day, head over to the stunning Basilica of Santa Croce, the resting place of legends like Galileo and Michelangelo. Afterward, dive into the bustling atmosphere of the Mercato Centrale (San Lorenzo Market). It’s a fantastic spot for street photography, capturing the chaotic beauty of vendors selling fresh pasta and Tuscan truffles.
